Happy 9 Year + 2 Day Anniversary

June 22nd was the 9 year anniversary of Jeff and my first date. Nine years is a long, long time. It is well over 1/4th of my life...468 weeks, 3,285 days. We have had our share of mediocre days but I wouldn't change these past 9 years for anything. When I think about the next 9 years, I know that they will bring us even more laughter, smiles, joy and immeasurable happiness as we continue to share our lives with each other and as we welcome our baby girl (fingers crossed that it won't take the next 9 years for that to happen). We are not the same people now that we were 9 years ago...we have grown and changed from experiences (good and not-so-good) but, at heart, we are the same hopeful dreamers who just want to be happy. We know that, at the end of every day, our most precious joy lies in each other. Happy Anniversary Jeff!!

Tequila!

Sorry for the pity party yesterday. It had to be done. I feel a little better today. It could be due to the pitcher of strawberry margaritas Jeff and I had with dinner tonight. Yum.

Is she real?

I am sad today. The stress of school on steroids and life has gotten to me and I am just sad. I am sitting here wishing I had my little girl to come home to so I could love her and listen to her giggle. I know it would take it all away. Don't get me wrong - I know being a parent isn't all roses and snapdragons. I know there are temper tantrums and potty training and time outs but I also know that just one, "I love you mommy" right now would make the worst day bearable. It's easier to point out the trials of parenthood when you don't have the choice of parenthood taken away from you.

I call this post, "Is she real?," because I am really wondering if she is...if this is...if I ever will have that joy in my life. Forgive me for not taking at face value every time someone tells me that it will happen when it's time or that this is just teaching me to appreciate parenthood more. I have heard it and smiled it away a million times already. I don't deserve this wait. I don't deserve to doubt that I will be a mommy. I don't deserve to have spent the last 7 years dreaming of holding my child and to ONLY have that to hold on to. I don't deserve to lose hope. I don't deserve to wonder if my child has been born and is out there crying and growing older in an orphanage somewhere and not knowing that a mommy-wannabe half-way around the world would give her own life for her. This hurts right now. I am in a funk, a bad one.

My new guilty pleasure

I have been hugely stressed out these past few weeks with school putting me in major overdrive. I even did a little research on what it would take to do the Vulcan mind meld with my instructors only to find out that it's feasible solution to my stress dilemma. One thing that gives me a little pleasure these days is my Starbuck's fix. I found a new summer drink that is A-W-E-S-O-M-E! The Caramel Light Frappucino rocks and it is only 4 WW points for a Venti. The only bad part is that it costs 5-freakin-dollars. Although I am broke, I have been treating myself a couple times a week. Don't tell Jeff cause he will probably cut my allowance. Tomorrow I have clinicals and there is a Starbuck's right in the hospital. I have to walk by it to get to my car...so how can I resist??

Two Years

Today is the 2 year anniversary of the day that China stamped our paperwork...our 2 year LID-versary. I don't have to repeat that I never thought we would be still waiting at this point but here we are...with potentially 2 MORE years to go. I won't write a long, drawn on post about my personal pity party today but know that I am having one in true Nicole style. I am going to drown myself in studying and clinical paperwork. Cheers!

Smattering

I have a smattering of things to blog about tonight...(the definition of smattering, in case you are wondering is --> "a small scattered amount or number")

1. Jeff is on his way back from Orlando with our car, semi-fixed. Supposedly there are some things wrong with it...the tire seems faulty or mis-aligned, the airbags aren't put back in right, yada yada. The car fixers are butts.

2. I had 2 big exams today. One could have gotten me kicked out of nursing school. It didn't.

3. I'm sleepy. I have been studying till about 10pm every night. That means from 8:30am to about 10pm with the occasional break to pee, drive home or stuff my face, I am learning to be nursey. It's exhausting. 8 more weeks of the summer semester...

4. Today is Mom's birthday. Happy Birthday Mom!! I love you!

5. So Obama has "cinched" the nomination. I will stop there. It's amazing when you don't watch TV or read the news on the internet how you fall so out of the world's loop.

6. I finally turned on the TV and the stinkin' Circus of the Stars is on...what's next?

That's all for now. Night night my peeps.

Hyperphosphacalcinatrikalemi - what??

Today I took one of the hardest tests I have EVER taken. Fluid and electrolytes and acid base balance. A great big, huge bummer of a test. So much chemistry...and I HATE chemistry. Jeff and I went to the beach this weekend for a cardiology conference and what did I do? I sat by the pool, on our patio and in the car reading about sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate and crap. The bad thing is that as soon as I took a break, I forgot everything that I had read...it was just too much. Anyway...this test is over and I can put it behind me until the final exam...which is only 8 weeks away. On to the next ones...pediatrics exam and nutrition exam on Wednesday. Did I mention that the summer semester sucks?

Adoption Forecast: June

Ok...I am going to preface this by saying that it SUCKS. Last month, the China Adoption Forecast changed their formula to make the referral estimates more accurate. This also means that they are a lot worse. This is where we were before the change happened: http://nicolesdoodlings.blogspot.com/2008/04/adoption-forecast-april.html . Our estimate was September 3, 2009...bad enough considering that we started this process in October, 2005.

This month, our estimate is June 28, 2010. You read it right, 2010! This will mean more than a 4 year wait from our Log In Date (LID) and almost 5 years from when we first submitted our application to our agency. Add on to that 4-5 years of fertility treatment and you have one heck of a gestation. At this point, I just don't want it to get worse...better would be great but I can breathe as long as it doesn't get worse.

More facts:
  • There are 143 LIDs in front of us, 10 were referred this month (still not official), 3 last month. The average for the last 6 months has been 6.3 days per month.
  • March, 2006 is anticipated to a be HUGE month as far as dossiers submitted to China. Some people are saying it could take a whole year just to get through that month.
  • People receiving referrals right now have waited about 29 months. Our 2 year LID-versary is next weekend but we still have about 2 years to wait.
  • We lost 3 months during our paperwork process because the fingerprinters at the police dept. couldn't take my fingerprints right and they were rejected twice. We also lost 9 weeks waiting for Atlanta USCIS to process our immigration paperwork and a month for Alabama DHR to approve our home study. If we didn't have that additional time lost, we would be about to get our referral or would have already seen our daughter's face and be on the way to China.
  • I am bitter, can you tell?
  • There is not one dag-gom thing I can do about it.

I can't freakin' breathe!!

I am being a baby right now. I have a cold and can't breathe through either one of my nostrils. My face hurts, my head aches, my ears are clogged up and I just want to sleep but I can't...cause I can't breathe and sleep requires that you actually have some involuntary oxygen exchange going on. The only thing that saved me last night were my 3 pillows and a finger full of Vick's VapoRub applied liberally to my upper lip. I even had to wake up to re-apply it once it all got wiped off when I blew my nose for the billionth time. Woe is me.

Awaiting the return of the crunched up car

On Mother's Day Jeff and I were driving back from Orlando, got turned around and ended up crunching up our car. Actually, we were hit in the side by a Hummer (our fault). It was a traumatic experience for both Jeff and I but we miraculously made it out with just a sore neck for Jeff and a bruised up leg for me. We headed back to Orlando where we were able to spend more time with Grandma before Jeff flew back and I stayed.
It has now been over 3 weeks (and $9,000+ in repairs) since it went in the shop and we are still waiting on a part to come in. It's kind of a pain in the butt not knowing when your car will be ready when you are 650 miles from the shop. Maybe this weekend, maybe next week some time, yada yada. Call me a pooper but I don't like the idea of Jeff driving down to Orlando alone since he was the driver when we had this accident. I will just worry until I cause myself to have angina. Anyway...hopefully we will have our nice, comfy, paid-off, fixed up car back soon...one way or another.

Going Home

Going home means different things to everyone. To the college student, it is crashing in their old room, being taken care of, having their laundry done by mom and chillin'. To a new parent it is bringing their newborn baby through the doors of their house, introducing him or her to their new life. To a person deployed with the military, it is running into the arms of their loved ones and resting their head on their own pillow at night.

Tomorrow I will go home after having been in Orlando for my grandmother's memorial. Life won't be quite the same having lost a loved one. When I walk in my door, it will be different. Friday evening, my grandmother came home in the arms of her husband, my sad but strong grandfather. We celebrated her life, listened to her loved ones recall sweet, funny and extremely special times that she gave to us, laughed, cried and accepted. Once it was over, my grandfather took her in his arms and carried her out of the chapel and home for good. But really she went home a week ago tonight. Home is different to each of us. To some, it is crossing the threshold and being in the familiar surroundings in which they have shared their lives. For others, it is finding their eternal home in heaven. Fortunately, now, Grandma has done both and is really, really home.

Who do women play softball?

Jeff is sitting here watching the World Series of women's college softball and I am wondering why it is that women don't play baseball?? Why do they only play softball? And why do men not play softball?? I asked Jeff and he said that it must have something to do with hand-eye coordination. He can bite me for that one.

10 weeks of H-E-double hockey sticks

I started the second semester of nursing school on Tuesday and WHOA! am I a stressball already. This is supposed to be the most difficult semester of the five and I have it during the summer which means 10 weeks to complete 16 weeks worth of material and tests. It is going to suck.

On a more positive note (cause that is one of my goals - to be more positive), it is interesting material. I have med-surg/Adult Nursing and Pediatrics this semester. I will be studying a lot more about specific disease processes and working with kids...has to be fun, right? I'll let you know.

This rough week will be capped off with Grandma's memorial on Friday night. I didn't think I was going to be able to go since that is the day we are supposed to be learning how to start IVs but, thanks to an understanding professor and my Dad picking me up at the airport, I am gonna make it. I hope we can all come together and celebrate her wonderful life.

Grandma

I have lived so much of my life spared of loss. Almost 9 years ago, my Grandma B. passed away. It hurt. I miss her every day and hear her laughter in my dreams. Shortly afterwards, my Grandpa B. passed. I still think of him telling me during a random kid tempter tantrum, "You look prettier when you are smiling than when you are crying." I think of that almost every time I feel tears fall down my cheeks. Jeff's mother passed away 2 years ago. She taught me so much and I never thought I could love someone outside of my immediate family so much. I blogged about her and Jeff here ---> http://nicolesdoodlings.blogspot.com/2007/05/loss-grief-and-love.html .

I have been lucky...very, very lucky. The past 3 weeks have been some of the most difficult, affirming and life altering for me. My grandmother has been ill for quite some time. She was admitted to the hospital on Christmas Eve with pneumonia and stayed there until Wednesday, May 7th. She wanted so badly to be home and she got her wish that day. An ambulance brought her home where she was cared for by some amazing nurses and others who she had spent her whole life caring for, her family. I drove down to Orlando that day and stayed there (although I tried to go home and was miraculously called back) for almost 2 weeks. I witnessed so much during that time...the power of will, the strength of the spirit, the lastingness of humor and joy and the truly awe inspiring women who gave me life.

I had the opportunity to celebrate life with my grandmother and family and the opportunity to see my mom, vulnerable yet so strong as she sacrificed everything to nurture and love her own mother. I have never in my life seen so much strength and true, unselfish love as I have witnessed in my mother in these past weeks. I knew she was amazing but I now know even more so.

My grandmother, in the past few weeks, has given me belly laughs, crocodile tears, a warm and full heart and a new idea of what the power of love can truly accomplish. Jeff and I left Friday night to spend Memorial Day weekend with her and our family and we arrived around 1pm on Saturday. I never expected what was awaiting. A day of crying, hand-holding, knowing that IT was close. Raw emotion, desperation and an inexplicable aching. So not ready for her to go but not prepared for her to stay if it meant even a moment more of pain. Saturday night at 10:37 pm, I stood around my grandmother with my grandfather, Mom and Dad, Uncle David, Aunt Shelly, Aunt Susie, my cousin Dave and Jeff and watched as my precious grandmother took her very last breath. For a moment I thought I had also taken my last breath. I couldn't breathe, couldn't speak, couldn't think, couldn't move. All I could do was hurt deeply and passionately. When I heard my sobs, I knew it was real. She was gone.

I thank God for her...for her wonderful life and for her graceful and affirming passing. I can't write what I am feeling now because there really are no words. I am sad but at peace, empty but at the same time so full, grieving yet so very, very grateful. I have nothing now except a lifetime of memories and the knowledge that she will really always be with me. So now I pray for my own strength...to put aside my selfishness and help those that I love; for my grandfather to know peace and for his hurt to be eased, for him to lean on his children and all who love him for strength; for my Mom to know that she is a fantastic woman who gave her mother joy in the most trying times and did as she has done for me all these years, made every moment of every day so much more precious just by being there; for healing and smiles as we all remember and treasure what my grandmother has given us; and for my grandmother, an eternity of dancing among the clouds in Heaven, never far from us, knowing that she will always, always be with us.

Tragedy for the adoption community

Steven Curtis Chapman has inspired lots and lots of couples to pursue adoption from China. He is a Christian music artist and adoptive father to 3 girls from China and 3 biological children. His family experienced horrible tragedy yesterday when his oldest son was backing out of the family's driveway and hit his little sister, killing her. Maria was 5 years old. I can't even imagine what this family is experiencing...they can't be angry with their son...it was an accident. But at the same time they are reeling from the loss of their little girl who was born in their hearts, that they wished for and who blessed their lives. I am so sad for this family. Today's tears are for them.

Incommunicado

There has been LOTS going on lately. I am a little overwhelmed with life lately and it has had a pretty bad side effect...I have not talked to ANYONE. I have voicemails piling up that I refuse to listen to, e-mails and text messages that I haven't answered and other people I know I need to check in with but haven't. I know this isn't a very flattering quality but I can be a real slacker when it comes to communicating during times of stress.

The actual real stress will come Tuesday when school starts back up. I will be going non-stop from then until at least August 4th. Maybe this period of incommunicado is just a trial run for the rest of the summer. I still feel like a slacker though. If I can make it through the next few months without losing all my friends then life will be good.

Climbing Stone Mountain: Check!

When I was new to college, I was required to take a freshman orientation class that helps you to get to know your new city, acclimate to college life, etc. and one of our activities was a trip to Stone Mountain where my group would hike to the top. Yeah, right! I made it about half way up and then had to let my group continue without me...it was a horrible feeling and one that hasn't left me. So Sunday morning since I was in Atlanta, Jason and I set out to defeat that demon. We made it to the top with no real problem, just some aching bodies and me panting half way. It was great...just great.

i love you grandma

If I beg you to stay
Will you hold my hand
Give me just one more day?

Of your nurturing touch
Your voice filled with love
That I long for so much?

Is it wrong for me
To want you here
Endlessly?

To refuse this goodbye
Turn around
And wonder why?

Why do you have to go?
I'm not ready
This is all I know.

But I see through your tears
Your beautiful face
Surrendering to fears.

And now I see
This is the way
It was meant to be.

Your time of peace is near
When there's no pain
Just joy, no fear.

So now I am here to stay
Holding your hand
For just one more day.

Tomorrow you will be my star
Twinkling at night
But never too far.

You will stay here in my heart
Forever, always
Never apart.

The earthquake

While I am immersed up in what is happening in my world right now, I can absolutely not ignore what is happening in China. The overwhelming tragedy of the earthquake and aftershocks have left me speechless. So many people are worrying at this minute about missing and lost family members and their lives have been immeasurably altered. I can not even wrap myself around this.

Please pray for all the suffering in China, all the men, women and children who will never know their "normalcy" again and for the babies in orphanages who have been moved to safe locations, whose orphanages and foster homes have been destroyed and those who haven't reported yet if they are safe and alive. Our baby girl may be there now. Pray for her. She may not be born yet. Pray for her birth family who, undoubtedly, have been touched in some way by this tragedy.
